Der Republikaner John McCain war die Details zu seinem neuen Wirtschaftsprogramm am Montag noch schuldig geblieben, gestern legte er konkrete Maßnahmen mit einem Gesamtvolumen von 52,4 Mrd. Dollar vor. Unter anderem will McCain die Steuern auf Aktiengewinne halbieren. Er sieht aber auch Hilfen für Sparer und Arbeitslose vor:

"If I am elected president, I will help to create jobs for Americans in the most effective way a president can do this — with tax cuts that are directed specifically to create jobs, and protect your life savings. I will stand up to the corrupt ways of Washington, the wasteful spending and the abuses of power and I will end these abuses, whatever it takes. I will lead reforms to help families keep their homes, and retirees to keep their savings, and college students to pay their tuition, and every citizen to afford health care, and America to reclaim its energy independence." Barack Obama hatte bereits am Vortag sein 60 Mrd. Dollar schweres Paket vorgelegt, dass sich vor allem an Rentner, Sparer und den Mittelstand richtet. Die New York Times vergleicht die Wirtschaftsprogramme beider Kandidaten gründlich: 

"McCains proposals complement an overall economic program that hews to the Republican playbook: tax cuts geared especially to individuals and businesses at the top of the income scale, in the belief that they will stimulate the economy and create jobs that benefit everyone. (...) The stimulus package that Obama announced Monday, combined with his longstanding economic agenda, reflect Democratic emphasis on tax cuts intended for middle-class and low-wage workers and for the smallest businesses, as well as spending increases for public works to create jobs."

Auch John McCain hat prominente Untertützer in der Musikszene. Jetzt veröffentlichte der Countrystar Hank Willams Jr. ein Musikvideo, indem er sich für McCain und dessen Vizepräsidentenkandidatin Sarah Palin stark macht. Allerdings kursieren unterschiedliche Textversionen, berichtet CNN. So fehlt im Text auf der offiziellen McCain-Seite die Aussage, Palin sei ein "good lookin dish”. Politisch brisanter: Im veröffentlichten Text heißt es: “John and Sarah  don't have radical friends to whom their careers are linked.” Tatsächlich sing Willamson aber: "...terrorist friends".

Heute abend findet die dritte un dletzte TV-Debatte der beiden Kandidaten statt. Dabei geht es um Fragen der Innen- und Sicherheitspolitik. McCains Kampagne kündigte aber bereits auch an, die Vorwürfe wieder anzusprechen, Obama pflege gute Kontakte zu ehemaligen amerikanischen Terroristen wie Bill Ayers. Die ARD überträgt live ab 2.55 Uhr nachts.

Nach einer neuen Umfrage der New York Times führt Obama derzeit mit 53 Prozent stärker den je vor McCain, der nur noch auf 39 Prozent kommt. Harte persönliche Angriffe auf den Gegner würde laut dieser Umfrage den Republikanern nichts bringen, im Gegenteil:

"The top reasons cited by those who said they thought less of Mr. McCain were his recent attacks and his choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate."
