Zum Jahrestag der Terroranschläge zeigt Gallup auf, dass dieses Thema auch für die Amerikaner an Bedeutung verloren hat. So fürchten sich 38 Prozent vor einem neuen Terroranschlag. Vor einen Jahr waren es noch 47 Prozent, vor den Anschläge auf das World Trade Center allerdings nur 28 Prozent.

Die New York Times geht nach der "Bridge to Nowhere" nun einem weiteren Vorzeigeprojekt von Sarah Palin in Alaska nach. Die geplante Exportpipeline, die Alaskas Gasvorräte erschließen soll und die Palin dem Zugriff der großen Ölkonzerne entwunden hatte, ist demnach bislang vor allem eine Vision: "The reality is far more ambiguous than the impression Ms. Palin has left at the convention and on the campaign trail. Certainly she proved effective in attracting developers to a project that has eluded Alaska governors for three decades. But an examination of the pipeline project also found that Ms. Palin has overstated both the progress that has been made and the certainty of success."

Steven Waldman von beliefnet.com erklärt im Wall Street Journal, warum Sarah Palins Glauben die Amerikaner so stark polarisiert: "Palin has many on the left scared. She seems not so much George W. Bush in lipstick as Jerry Falwell in lipstick. Meanwhile, Christians are inspired by the Alaska governor — not just because she’s pro-life or Christian but because she seems to “walk the walk.” It’s precisely because Falwell and Bush have put forward such a mixed image for Christianity that many Christians thirst for a leader who shares their values but lives her life in accordance with them. Such Christians view attacks on Palin as attacks on Christians in general." Fundiert und vorurteilsfrei geht Waldman Palins polit-religiöse Ansichten durch und trennt das unspektakuläre vom politisch Anstößigen. Zum Beispiel, dass sie die Wählerschaft in Gläubige und Ungläubige aufteilt, sich auf göttliche Unterstützung für ihre Lieblingsprojekte beruft und sich über die Interessen anderer Religionsgemeinschaften hinwegsetzt.

Die Angriffe der Republikaner auf Barack Obama werden agressiver. In einem neuen TV-Spot wird den Demokraten vorgeworfen, sich wie eine Horde von Wölfen auf Sarah Palin Fersen geheftet zu haben. CNN dokumentiert den Ausflug in die Tierwelt. Der Werbefilm von gestern, der Obama vorwirft, für Sexualerziehung im Kindergarten einzutreten, stellt zudem die Positionen des Kandidaten falsch dar, berichtet die NYT: "The ad claims that Obama favors “comprehensive sex education” for kindergarten students. “Learning about sex before learning to read?” the narrator asks in the 30-second advertisement. The commercial also asserts that a sex-education bill introduced in Illinois, is his “one accomplishment” in the field of education. Both sets of accusations seriously distort the record."

Pollster.com weist nach, dass McCains Aufschwung nach dem Parteitag sich nicht nur in den US-weiten Umfragen, sondern auch in den einzelnen Bundesstaaten positiv für ihn auswirkt: "This post-convention bounce may or may not last, but at the moment the evidence is that it is moving across the states (and these are mostly competitive states) at about the same rate as it is for the national polls."

Gestern trat Obama bei David Letterman auf und zeigte sich nach den üblichen Witzen recht nachdenklich. So räumte er ein, dass mit dem Erscheinen von Sarah Palin die Zeiten vorbei sind, in denen er allein die Titelbilder von Time und Newsweek dominiert hatte. Aber "I had a recent offer with Popular Mechanics". Tatsächlich belege McCains Wahl eine tiefgreifende Wende bei den Republikanern: "Ultimately what we’ve seen is a concession on the part of the McCain campaign that this election is going to be about change. For the last two years, we’ve been talking about needing to change how Washington works, how the country is managed and people were saying, ‘No, it’s about experience, experience, experience,’ and over the last week and a half I think they recognized that, no, the American people want something fundamentally different and for a good reason."
